Line, Streak, Writing, Horizon, Tropics and Scar
An important step is taken when one of the main private collections in the country organizes a new place for its storage and exhibition. Thus, the chance emerges for a selection highlighting the collection’s strongest characteristics: its density and ability for more profound study of its key artists, spanning multiple generations and languages and the search for works that are large in scale and complexity.
The selection and arrangement of the works displayed here were guided by these properties, adopting strategies to combine the potential of the ensemble with the legibility of the groupings. The mezzanine – Line – is organized on the basis of works that emulate devices in transit between idea and concrete action (models, equations and projections), making a board game where abstract thought intersects with speculative imagination.
On the ground floor, a diagonal avenue cuts the space and contains sculptures and installations by Detanico and Lain, Rivane Neuenschwander, Carlos Fajardo, Thiago Rocha Pitta, Tunga and Nuno Ramos – a journey on land and water, that always involves air. The perpendicular axises to the avenue comprise five nuclei: Streak, with multiple approaches to the stroke, from the most delicate to the most methodical, including those that open up to chance and rupture; Writing, which transits at the threshold of visibility and / or legibility; Horizon, with evocations of landscapes in transformation, characterized strongly by several imaginations and cultural moulds; Tropics, with incisive images that reference the conflicted, atavistic memory of a country still in formation process; and Scar, with works that are constituted above all by the frank treatment of their materiality, shaped, cut and assembled in a way that exudes what it has in terms of body, voluptuousness and convulsion.
The exhibition thus is configured like an organism or like a biome, with associations of proximity, contrast and divergence. When visiting the exhibition, it’s important to keep in mind that each one of the works is a living organ, as alive as the thoughts and artists gathered here. A meaningful step is taken when each of us accepts the challenge of exerting our attention toward art that is equally vibrant.
